When you plan for nothing, you get something
Today was "Kindergarten Night" It is an afternoon/evening when parents of the kids coming into kindergarten next year can talk with the teachers and ask us questions.
It is not a whole lot of fun. Two years ago only 2 parents showed up. (by the way - it lasts an hour and a half) so we ended up sitting around for most the time. Because of that, we didn't do it last year.
Well this year they tried it again. Great! Another hour and a half to sit around and do nothing. So I came up with the brilliant idea (seriously - it's great!) to work on the writing portfolios that we have to do before the last day of school. So I got all the kids writing samples and the forms to fill out. I told the other teachers what I was doing and they thought its was awesome and did the same thing.
SO 4 o'clock rolls around (that's when kindergarten night starts). We walked into the library and there are 10 families sitting there waiting for us!!!! WOW! So - yeah - we didn't really plan anything to present so we just introduced ourselves, showed them the kindergarten classrooms and let them ask questions.
So much for writing portfolios!!! Man - I thought I was on top of it - way ahead of schedule! Oh well.
Cool thing though! Celena (my friend from church) has a niece coming to kindergarten at my school! Yep - I am going to sneak her onto my class list!!!!
I will for sure have another student in my class - I am going to request that he be put in my room. He has a severe nut allergy. The parents were really worried about the whole school thing what with his allergy (and rightfully so). I told them that I would make sure he was put in my room. I explained that my niece has a severe peanut allergy and that I know about all the precautions and how to use an epi pen. I could see the relief on their faces after we had a chance to talk about everything.
It will be scary having him in my room but I know he will be safer in my room than in another classroom. (the other teachers agree!)
