To Have or Not to Have...

...a job next year.

It was not my best of days today. I knew there were serious money issues going on in education. I was a little worried but didn't dwell on it.

Today our principal went to a budget meeting at the district office. When she got back she poked her head in my room and asked to meet with me after school.

My stomach dropped. I knew she had just come from the district meeting and that it wouldn't be good news.

After school I went into her office. There were about 9 of us in there. She wanted to give us a heads up before the big school wide meeting on Thursday.

The district is looking at cutting all first and second year teachers. When I say they are looking at it I mean that if we don't get enough money from the stimulus package that Jan Brewer has - we are cut. The only way we are safe is if we get enough money from the state to fund our jobs.

Here is the sticky part. I am a 2.5 year teacher. So were do I fall? Will I be bunched in with the 1st and 2nd year teachers or the 3rd year teachers?

I just have to wait to see if I get a letter (which is bad). Before or on April 15th the district has to send out a letter to the teachers who will be getting cut. This letter will say that we possibly will not get a contract next year.

Here is where I am frustered. If we get this letter we might STILL get a contract later on down the road. Last year our instructional specialists got these same letters. Before the school year ended they were given their contracts and everything worked out. Will that happen here? Noboby knows.

We could be given the contracts in May, June, July - we dont' know.

One of the teachers in this meeting said to the Principal, "so we need to get summer jobs and just wait?" That is when I spoke up and said, "I am not going to sit around and wait, if I don't have a contract by the last day of school I will go somewhere else." I think my principal was a little taken back.

There are just so many unanswered questions. I left that meeting completely frusterated with no one to be mad at. My principal and assistant principal are heartbroken over the whole situation and have no answers either. The principal was crying, the assistant principal (a man) was choked up and couldn't talk. We were all crying.

On my way home I figured out who I should be mad at - Janet Napolitano. She created this budget mess and left us with no money.

OKAY SO WHAT NOW

I am going to have my plan B. I am going to hope that I get my contract. If not, I am going to move to a different state. I came home and looked at the states that are less affected by the resession. I have always liked Colorado and it is not too hard to get a teaching certificate for that state.

So I will have my resume and cover letter done and saved on my computer. If I don't have my contract by my deadline of the last day of school, I will send out my resume and go from there.

I know that everything happens for a reason and have faith that it will all workout (whichever way that may be)
